How to Measure for your new Custom made Window Coverings
  • Accurate measurements are essential for properly fitted blinds. Be sure to use a quality steel measuring tape since cloth tapes or wood rulers are not dependable for precise measurements.
  • Measure all windows, even though they may appear to be identical.
  • Examine your window or door to identify any handles, screens or locking mechanisms that can create special challenges when installing and operating your blinds.

INSIDE MOUNT
Inside mounted blinds are enclosed within your window frame. Many people prefer this type of installation because it provides a finished and built-in look without covering your window trim. For room darkening purposes we strongly suggest an outside mount.
  1. Check the depth of your window frame. For your blind to finish flush with the window frame on an inside mount, you will need a depth of 2 inches. The minimum depth that will allow your blind to mount and function correctly correctly is 1 1/2
  2. Measure the width of the window in three locations: top, middle and bottom. Select the narrowest tight inside dimension, and record this measurement to the nearest 1/8”. We will make a slight deduction from this measurement to allow your new blind to function correctly.
  3. Measure the height of the window in three locations: left, middle and right. Select the longest dimension. Record this measurement to the nearest 1/8”

OUTSIDE MOUNT
In an outside mount, your new blind will be mounted on your wall or moulding. Outside mounts are often used to make a window appear larger, to provide additional stacking space for the blinds, or to hide a less than attractive window frame. For this type of mount, you will need at least 2 inches of flat mounting surface.
  1. Measure the exact width of the window frame from edge to edge; including overlap. This should be the exact area to be covered. Record this measurement to the nearest 1/8”. We will make your blind to this size. Depending on product we may recommend adding to this size to insure proper coverage. ie. Verticals, Panel Tracks and Draperies.
  2. Measure the exact height from the upper edge to the lower edge of the window frame; including overlap. This should be the exact area to be covered. Record this measurement to the nearest 1/8”. If measuring to a floor, leave approximately 1/2” clearance.

Window Opening Handles
If your windows are equipped with crank handles to open and close them, you may wish to consider replacing the standard handle with a folding handle to provide additional clearance for your blinds to operate properly. These can be supplied with your blinds on request.
